Fizz is a series B social media startup that brings together students through a private campus discussion board and news feed with credential-based anonymity.

As a contract product designer, my main projects included leading the design for a new set of mobile features (FizzMatch + Mentions) and creating the company website (fizz.social)

I led the design for a new set of social features on the mobile app, collaborating with the engineering team and leadership from ideation to launch.

THE Question

How can we design a feature to socially engage existing users and bring in new ones on an anonymous platform?

Ideation

Through conducting user research interviews and collaborating with leadership to align on company goals, I came up with these foundational principles for the new feature.

Introduce personal identification in a way that is safe and exciting to users.

Motivate existing users to bring in new users through their real-life connections

Add value to the social life of users on and beyond the app

Process

Although I cannot share more about my design process, these principles were built of off to conduct user analysis, iterate designs, prototype, and handoff to engineering for the final implementation.

HOW IT WORKS

Use an @ to mention someone on a crush post, fully anonymously.

A minimum character requirement means that users have to say something about their crush & add to the conversation.

If two users anonymously crush on each other, we notify both of them.

We create a private direct message chat for the two matched users.

The number of @ mentions a user receives are viewable in their profile.

Only you can see this number. You can view all mentions of you, but not who posted them unless you match.

RESULTS

Increased baseline user engagement and retention

Over 1/3 of daily active users signed up for mentions on launch day and it became the highest trending search term for two weeks.

Encouraged existing users to bring in new users to Fizz by phone number

Through the mentioning system, users who were not on Fizz or have not already input their information could be added by an existing user via phone number.

Enabled students to expand their social connections in an exciting but risk-free way

FizzMatch and mentions saw an overwhelming positive reaction on opinion posts after it's launch.

I was in charge of completely redesigning and implementing a new company website. I worked directly with the engineering team, marketing, and the co-founders.

The company website was… not good

The existing company website consisted of a single landing page with a few links to notion & google docs.

Project Goals

Create pages and a navigation system for new content

As the company has expanded, so has its need to communicate additional content. That content, plus the existing content on notion and google docs, all needed to be moved to the site.

Establish a clear and compelling brand identity

Communicating a unified and compelling brand voice is integral to the growth and reputation of the company.

Improve the user experience, both internally and externally

The new website must be an intuitive and pleasant experience for not only site visitors, but also for the internal marketing team when they need to add & edit content in the future.

Design Process

For ease of editing after handoff to marketing, I decided to use a design-centered website editor to build the site from scratch. Within 5 weeks, I achieved my 3 project goals through an iterative design process and close collaboration with engineering, leadership, and marketing.
